In a change of pace, I'm diving right in this week. I still haven't covered August 15, 2021. I was planning to do it last week. I had to travel for work so I assumed that I could squeeze an entry in at an airport or at a hotel, but you know, things come up. I think I should be able to get a second entry in but the US Open starts tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes. In travel news, my extreme dislike of the city of Houston, Texas remains unchanged. I'm not a big fan of Texas in general and Houston ranks several rungs below all the other major cities. And keep in mind that during one weekend in Austin, Texas, I got food poisoning and then later had a near miss traffic incident that would have surely put me and a close friend in the hospital. So yeah, Houston fails to even beat out "food poisoning" and "near death experience". The CBS SUNDAY MORNING POWER RANKINGS Excluded from consideration this week is the rebroadcast of Anthony Mason's story on

Once again, there will be a double shot of ranking this week. And once again we're going to do it Quiz Show style, i.e. taking the second part first. And once again, you can blame travel for the on again off again nature of the rankings this summer since I was driving back from another trip last weekend. Travel and tennis. Yes the Cincinnati (officially called Western & Southern for sponsorship reasons) Open took place over the past 10 days (including qualifying rounds) and I was firmly engrossed, whether watching on TV or attending in person. Anyway, some things happened during the tournament. I will address them in the next post since last week's episode of Sunday Morning has a mental health tie-in. Instead, give me a few sentences (paragraphs) to talk baseball. My Cincinnati Reds (no, I don't own them) swept the Florida Marlins in a four game series this weekend. Notable because it is the third time they've swept a four game series this year (an unusual and rar

We're back for part deux and more cash! Being on vacation last weekend, I didn't even watch the August 1st episode of Sunday Morning until midweek. The sacrifices we all make. I know, right? So what we have in store for this week is a two-fer! Pictured above: Toofer Spurlock. I know I rarely take heed of the words "Brevity is the soul of wit," but I will try to be brief. Although, and I'm sure you already know this, that particular Shakespearean turn of phrase is one of many that is misunderstood. It's part of a joke. The words were spoken by Polonious, a ponderous old gasbag who is anything but brief. Here's the line in the full context: My liege, and madam, to expostulate What majesty should be, what duty is, What day is day, night night, and time is time, Were nothing but to waste night, day, and time; Therefore, since brevity is the soul of wit, And tediousness the limbs and outward flourishes, I will be brief. Your noble son is mad … Anyway, I

It's another one of those weeks. You know like we just had a couple weeks ago, where I can't be arsed to post a recap blog in a timely fashion. First, don't say I didn't warn you this might happen when summer started. And second, I feel like I have a valid excuse. Last weekend, I took a little trip to the Baltimore/D.C. area. Why? Why not. Maybe it's personal. Maybe I just wanted to live out the first track of the The Postal Service's first (and only) album, Give Up: To catch up on a couple things: Olympics recap : When not traveling, I did spend the majority of the last two weeks watching the Olympics. I am the reason why networks pay billions of dollars for broadcast rights. Does that make me culpable for the rampant corruption that accompanies pretty much every games? Like climate change, some things feel like an intractable problem. Shall I stop driving my car and start living in a yurt? That's not a completely facetious question by the way. Every Olym
